Our wholesome balms have been designed to provide a number of dermal benefits.
They are typically used to alleviate troublesome skin conditions such as dry, irritated, flaky or cracked skin, denuded red skin, and may also be used by those who suffer extremely dry skin or friction damage to exposed skin.
Our balms provide smooth, emollient friction reducing calm, as well as occlusive and moisture retaining protection. In areas troubled by wetness they can aid in repelling moisture.
Natural healing is facilitated by pH, osmotic and antioxidant attributes, each contributing to the perseveration, maintenance and repair of the skin surface.
What makes our products special:
Honey has been used therapeutically throughout history, and it is still used for medicinal purposes in a number of countries. It has, however, been largely ignored in Western medicine and is commonly dismissed as an ‘alternative’ form of therapy. Underlying the associated scepticism is a lack of knowledge of the scope of activity and mode of action of honey in therapeutic settings.
Recent research has determined that a mixture of honey, olive oil and beeswax has been found to be effective for the treatment of nappy rash, psoriasis, eczema and skin fungal infection. The authors concluded that the mixture was also appropriate and clinically effective in the treatment of haemorrhoids and anal fissures.
The Australian Rural Industries Development Corporation reports that numerous Australian honeys exhibit therapeutically beneficial levels of antibacterial activity.
Four aspects of the composition of honey has been identified, via modern scientific investigation as to contributing to its antibacterial activity:
- The low water activity inhibits microbial growth, particularly bacterial growth.
- Its low pH, a result of the formation of gluconic acid, also has a mild antibacterial effect.
- When diluted with water, hydrogen peroxide is formed by the action of the enzyme glucose oxidase.
- Finally, some honeys contain other compounds, largely uncharacterised, that have antimicrobial activity.
Our Olive Oil
Olives appeared in Israel about 45,000 years ago and their precious oil has been included in our wonderful balms to provide a botanical lipid source of skin moisturisation, emolliency with soothing spreadability and natural co-adjuvants to help maintain skin pliability and softness.
- Phytosterols have shown to have positive impact on irritated human skin.
- One of the most common fatty acids used in skin moisturisation and repair is oleic acid; it is highly stable to oxidation and is reported to have high emolliency.
Unsurprisingly our olive oil is exceptionally high in both phytosterols and oleic acid. Moisturisation is usually considered to be simply occlusivity (reducing moisture loss) and humectancy (attracting moisture). However modern science has recently determined that the inclusion of substances such as olive oil may have expanded to multiple effects such as modulation of barrier function; contributing to the health and wellbeing of layers deeper within the skin.
For example – Changes in the fragile skin structures can occur in dry skin contributing to scaling and flaking, and – Lipids are useful penetration enhancements in dermatologic delivery systems, especially in applications such as skin repair.
Our beeswax is obtained directly from the walls of the honeycomb of the bee, Apis mellifera; by melting it in pure hot water and removing the foreign matter.
It occurs as yellow or light brown pieces or plates with a plesant, faint and characteristic odour of honey. Characteristically it has a fine-grained, matt and non-crystalline fracture, and becomes soft and malleable when warmed in on the skin. Included in our balm for its protective effects, it helps to establish a barrier to inflammation and infection and is one of the most traditional of dressings for irritated and inflamed skin.
Blended into our balms, Beeswax is ideal for smoothing over soothing redness, itch and dry, cracked or irritated skin. We pride ourselves on our hand crafted, premium quality whole honey balms.
Each of our products are manufactured in hygienic facilities and are supported by modern science, and just as importantly they are backed by our family and centuries of tradition.
